Fitness Day

Today was Fitness Day! Many classes celebrated health and wellness through fun and exercise! The 5th grade classes competed against each other in a game in the gym, 4th graders played a tag game called "Powerball", 1st grade classes took a walk around the track, and all of us joined in for an all-school dance off!

3rd Grade Snowshoe Experience

Our 3rd graders recently read a book called "The Snow Walker" by Margaret and Charles Wetterer. In the book, a young boy and his father make snowshoes during the blizzard of 1888 and go about the city delivering canned milk to neighbors. To help bring the book to life, teachers invited Katie Cantu from the Jasper County Conservation Board to bring in snowshoes for our kids to try. The 3rd graders got to put on a pair of snowshoes and try walking on and around our snow piles!

Look What's Happening in the Library

I found the kids in Mr. Castings' class this week busy researching in the library. Students got to pick a country to research using books and encyclopedias, and then were writing a letter to describe what they had learned about their country. Brittney couldn't wait to tell me all she was learning about Cuba!

I also caught the students in Ms. Turner's class busily working in the computer lab. They've been bringing in pictures of their early years and creating a timeline to show the big events in their lives. I was amazed at how well they were able to use the computer software to create their timeline! When they're done they'll hang them in the hallways upstairs, so be sure to stop by and see them. They've got great pictures and descriptions to share!

Family Fun Night

Despite the snowy conditions Friday night, fun was had by all who attended our Family Fun Night! A magic show, followed by face painting and balloon animals was a big hit! Families also enjoyed making crafts and stopping by the booths of local community agencies. I'd like to thank our PTA, teachers, and the SYNC organization for their help with planning and facilitating the event!

Love is in the air! 2010 Valentine's Parties

Our school was buzzing with Valentine's excitement last Thursday! Each classroom enjoyed a party full of cards and treats. Some were even dancing, having Hershey kiss relay races, and playing Valentine's Bingo!

5th Grade Techies

Our 5th grade students are learning 21st century skills as they dive into Power Point! Mrs. Clute, LMC director, is teaching the students how to use Power Point to create multimedia presentations. Right now, they're learning the details of how to create slides, format backgrounds, make transitions, etc. Soon, they'll be able to use Power Point to present their own research.

Human Sculptures

The 5th graders in Mrs. Humpal's art class have been studying sculptures and are using plastic wrap to create their own pieces of art. Working together, they wrap the plastic wrap around their bodies and then carefully remove, to reveal a figure of their hand, leg, or even head! You can see the pieces of art displayed on the shelves in the hallway across from the gym.

Learning is Fun!

I found many exciting things happening in classrooms as I walked through the building last week! Second graders were busy learning about two-digit subtraction in Mrs. Prime's room and playing a game of subtraction "Quizmo" in Mrs. Sommars's room. If you have a 1st-3rd grader, practicing basic addition and subtraction facts at home is a great way to reinforce math skills taught here at school.

The fourth graders in Mrs. Baumgart's room have been practicing a Reader's Theater and got to perform for the friends in Ms. Turner's room. Groups read tall tales about Pecos Bill, John Henry, Paul Bunyon, and others. They did a fantastic job reading with expression!

The kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders did a wonderful job at their winter concert last Wednesday. After many days of practice, they were ready to show off for their parents, grandparents, and other family & friends! Thanks to Mrs. Duffus for all her hard work to make the concert a success.

The Learning Never Ends...

I caught the 6th graders in Mrs. Bergeson's class actively engaged with a math game last week!Concepts such as multiplication and area were reviewed in the game. Using dice to create multiplication facts, students had to strategize to figure out how to beat their partner by filling up the game board first.

As I left the 6th graders and peeked into the hallway, I noticed these 5th graders sitting down reading. As they were waiting for others to finish in the restroom, they picked up some "Weekly Readers" and started reading! What a great way to spend a few extra minutes!

Then I traveled down to the 4th grade rooms and caught Mrs. Baumgart doing a science experiment with Ms. Turner's kids. Learning about static electricity really came to life as Mrs. Baumgart demonstrated how a balloon, charged with static electricity, and water repel from each other. After the demonstration, students got busy reading and completing a graphic organizer over the chapter.

Mrs. Prime's second graders recently read a book by Gary Soto called "The Big Bushy Mustache." They read the story together, then made the moustaches. After some practice, the 2nd graders walked around the building and read a portion of the story to different staff members. Mrs. Thomas and I were one of the lucky few to hear them read and they did a super job!

Turkey Time

The kindergartners have been busy learning about the first Thanksgiving. Students in both classes made Native American headbands. Their headbands tell a story using Native American writing. Ask your kindergartner what his/her story says!

Mrs. Cory's class has buddied up with sixth graders from Mrs. Bergeson's class and used their time together this week to make Oreo turkeys! The sixth graders had to read directions on how to make the turkey and then help their little buddy make it. They came out great, but I bet they tasted even better!

Generous Donation from Wal-Mart

Emerson Hough was chosen as one of Wal-Mart's "School of the Year" and was given a generous donation of $1000! Ten staff members were randomly chosen and surprised with a $100 gift card to use at any Wal-Mart towards classroom materials/supplies. Gina, one of the store managers, and I surprised the teachers and students yesterday when we went from classroom to classroom to drop off the gift certificates. Congratulations to the following winners: Mrs. Cory, Mrs. Kerber, Mrs. Bartels, Mrs. Sommars, Mrs. Deppe, Mrs. Baumgart, Mrs. Nelson, Mr. Law, Mrs. Bergeson, and me!

EH Rocks...Drug Free!

Look at all of our drug free rock stars! This week was Red Ribbon Week and Emerson Hough celebrated with an all school assembly on Wednesday. Ms. Hall, our fabulous guidance counselor, facilitated the assembly with the help of her 6th grade student council members. From student skits, a puppet show, a teacher skit, and songs, all our students got the message loud and clear - "Emerson Hough ROCKS, drug free!"

Reading Buddies

Several classrooms at Emerson Hough participate in a "buddy" program where older students get to come down and work with the littler ones. Fourth graders in Ms. Turner's room recently got together with their 1st grade buddies from Mrs. Bartels's room to read together. The kids really enjoy getting to read and talk about books together!

2009 McTeacher's Night

We had a fantastic time at McTeacher's Night! It was great to see the kid's faces light up when they saw their favorite teachers working at McDonald's! Thanks to all of you who came out to eat with us. We raised over $525.00! This money will go to our PTA to put towards a new playground. Again, thanks to all of you for your support!

Bowl-a-Thon

Our students have been busy raising money for our PTA "Bowl-a-Thon." Together, they raised almost $1800 towards building a new playground. Any student who participated in fundraising was invited to come bowling today. They had a great time and really showed their Husky Pride!

Writing with Reptiles

Our students got to experience a fantastic assembly yesterday, with David Nieves and his reptiles. David intertwined his love of reptiles and writing in a fun, interactive way that captured everyone's attention! David is a herpetologist from Nebraska who travels all over the world studying reptiles, amphibians, bugs, and just about every creature out there. He not only showed our kids photos from his journeys, but also brought along a turtle, lizard, and snakes. We were all on the edge of our seats when he brought out the 130 pound python! Besides talking about his love of reptiles, he also taught students the importance of writing and how to become better writers. Be sure to ask your child to tell you about what he/she learned from David!

Take a look at these involved writers! Mrs. Deppe's students have been having fun in writer's workshop. They're learning to write a rough draft, edit, revise, publish, and share their writing. They had so many ideas to write about...vacations, favorite foods, sports, etc. They did a fantastic job!
